I came across an article about walking for health that I wanted to share with you. My doctor tells me to walk more and I do try, but I need to walk more. The information in this article has me back on the treadmill more often.
The study from the American Cancer Society followed 140,000 older adults and reported that those who walked six hours per week had a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and cancer than those who were not active, but that walking even as little as two hours per week could begin to reduce the risk of disease and help you live a longer, healthier life.
How can you get more steps in each day?
- Take several small walks a day
- Walk to the grocery store or post office
- Park in the furthest spot from the building
- Take the stairs
- Get up and walk 5 minutes each hour
- Take one long 30-40 minute walk a day
There was also a very interesting video in this article from CBS This Morning talking about walking and the effects it has on your health. You can read the article and watch the video here on Blue Zones website.
Enjoy!
