A few of my friends and family I’m think a little nuts when I tell them I disinfect with essential oils instead of Lysol, Comet, Clorox or other cleaners that promise to kill germs.
As a matter of fact, early last year I started getting really serious about using essential oils to remove toxins in my home. I’ve been making all of our household cleaners, room deodorizer sprays, laundry soap, fabric freshener spray and disinfectant spray. Plus many bath and body items like deodorant, medicated foot and body powder, moisturizers and face serum.
The truth is I’ve become just a little bit of a germophobe. Not the full blown wack-a-doodle kind, but I’m much more careful about being around others when they are sick, disinfecting when someone comes around that is sick, keeping surfaces germ free and hand washing. It’s just all part my journey to getting and staying healthy.
I have to admit that I still had a spray can of Lysol under the cabinet for when someone has been in our home snotting and coughing all over. I thought of it as bringing out the “big guns”.
I’ve been using an essential oil product – Thieves cleaner for months now. (Thieves is a highly concentrated cleaner made with 100% essential oils.) So when I ran across an amazing Facebook post by Stacey Micklevitz about Thieves cleaner in 2 separate petri dish experiments, I was excited! These small scale experiments were run by a friend’s husband who just happens to be a scientist/biologist.
Here are the screen shots of the post about the experiments…
The first experiment.
The 2nd experiment.
So there you have it. Two separate experiments using Clorox, Lysol, Comet and Thieves Essential Oil Cleaner. Thieves won hands down both times! I realize this would not hold up as bonafide proof in any scientific or medical journal, but it’s good enough for me. I hope you think so too!

Sorry Jay, but I am not the biochemist who did this test so I have no idea.
If you wanted to compare this to Clorox leach why is there an off-brand bottle of bleach in the picture?
I am not the picture taker here. But honestly bleach is bleach.
