I’m always on the lookout for natural alternatives to toxic chemicals in our home. I make my own deodorant, body powder, disinfecting spray, vapor rub, foaming hand soap, cleaners and so much more at home for my family to minimize the exposure to toxins.
I am very concerned about the fragrances and carcinogens used in laundry soap and fabric softeners as they cover our bodies day and night because they are infused in our clothing. They’re just about the worst culprits in our homes, well in the top 10 anyway.
I’ve found 2 great alternatives to the more toxic laundry soaps Seventh Generation Free and Clear and ECOS Free and Clear. DO NOT be confused, not every brand that says free and clear are actually good for you. Most make up the chemicals they exclude with others just as harmful.
We also use Seventh Generation dish soap and dishwasher soap as well. Remember to purchase only the fragrance free as the ratings go from an A or B to an F rating in the EWG’s Healthy Living ratings real fast when you start adding fragrances.
The only thing I have never found was a replacement to good ol’ fabric softener. Nothing made our clothes soft or smell as good. I’ve tried every homemade fabric softener and bought every ‘Free and Clear” softener sheet including Bounce and they just don’t do the trick.
So you can imagine my excitement when I came across Ursela Herrara’s article on Natural 2 Ingredient Fabric Softener that I could make myself!
I had to give it a try, so I made some. Just this morning I washed a load of blankets and used her recipe for DIY natural fabric Softener and it works!
**Simply use 2 cups of Epsom Salts and 20 drops of your favorite essential oils. I used Lavender and Lemongrass oils. Then add a scoop to your washer with your detergent.**
WOOHOO!! You can’t see me but I am doing the happy dance wrapped up in soft static free blankets!

A couple of weeks ago I washed a blanket in with the towels and when I pulled it out of the dryer I thought I was being tasered! It shocked the heck out of me and crackled at me! My hair stood up. Literally. And I had used Bounce Free and Clear.
This time, no shocks, no angry crackles and the blankets are very soft and smell wonderful. I’m a happy girl.

If this is put in with your laundry detergent I can’t imagine any of it lingers thru all of the rinse cycles… Have you tried dissolving it in water and adding to the final rinse cycle?
This will work too!
