If you’ve been in search of a recipe to make DIY Non-toxic medicated powder, you’re gonna love this!
We like body powder around our house. It’s great for my husband’s work boots and tennis shoes (plus other sweaty smelly stuff ?). I love it on my under arms. I can’t stand that sticky feeling that antiperspirant gives me.
We’ve tried every kind from the cheap discount store brand to the expensive big name brands. They all have at least one thing in common…talcum powder. And many have nasty toxic chemicals in them as well.
Our bodies were not designed to handle all the toxins, chemicals, pesticides etc. that we absorb every day from the products we use, foods we eat and the environment. All of these toxins put stress on our bodies and our ability to function properly and fight off disease, not to mention causing diseases. Plus our immune system takes a real hit from all of this yucky stuff.
Anytime you can alleviate a toxic chemical, you alleviate some of the stress to your body, and that’s a really good thing!
Talc has become a concern and in some cases can be considered a carcinogen according to the American Cancer Society. There are possible links to ovarian, lung and endometrial (uterine) cancer.
In its natural form, some talc contains asbestos, a substance known to cause cancer. While this type of talc has not been used in products in the US since the 1970’s, there are still some lab research that suggests talcum could possibly be dangerous. The findings are mixed.
While the jury is still out on all of this, I don’t want any part of talc in any form on our bodies. This led me to come up with my own medicated body powder and foot powder combo. It’s really pretty simple, as all non-toxic chemical free recipes should be.
Here’s my easy 3 ingredient DIY Non-Toxic Body Powder / Foot Powder recipe:
Ingredients
2 cups Arrowroot Starch/Flour (Get it here)
10 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil (I use either Young Living or Plant Therapy)
6 drops Thieves (Young Living) or Germ Fighter Essential Oil
Note: All oils are not alike. The FDA says that “100% pure” only has to contain 5% essential oil. I know… WTFrig, right?!! The rest can be fillers of who knows what. YUCK!! Be sure you only use oils that are exactly what they say they are and have no fillers of any kind. I’ve done tons of research to find the best…
I love Young Living Oils. If you are a member you get a 24% wholesale discount and can earn oils too! But if you don’t want to do that, I highly recommend Plant Therapy Oils. You don’t have to be a member and their prices are great, plus free shipping! Both companies offer pure high quality products with no fillers, do outside 3rd party testing on their oils and are very organic & environmentally conscious which means a whole lot in my book!
Instructions
You can use whatever you have – a food processor, blender or smoothie blender. I started to suggest a hand mixer and I saw in my mind’s eye what that would look like, LOL. Don’t use a mixer. 🙂
First in goes the arrowroot starch, then the essential oils, then blend well to get the oils blended well without clumps.
Transfer it into the container of your choice. I use a small mason jar and the shaker cap from a large container of grated Parmesan cheese (the green top kind)
See… easy peasy! Now you are one step closer to having a toxin free home!

Hi Celene,
I’ve just made your recipe for my boyfriend to try as a substitute to Goldbond powder. He’s loving the results so far but says that it doesn’t quite ‘poof’ out of the gold bond container as easily as the original goldbond powder. It’s just a little bit clumpy. What’s your experience with it and have you experimented with adding any anti-caking agents at all? I’ve been doing some research and have found something called ‘Jelucell’ (only available to companies) or cornstarch. Look forward to hearing your thoughts!
Try adding a little non-gmo cornstarch. I agree it doesnt poof out as well. I use a powder puff but then I’m a girl. He probably won’t want to do that. 🙂
